Washington

Washington State is divided into 10 distinct regions each with its own unique identity.

1. Seattle - often referred to as the Emerald City is situated on protected Puget Sound and has all the amenities of a world class city. It affords a comfortable climate with mild winters and beautiful summers. Snow downtown is a rare event but within an hours drive some impressive ski resorts may be found. The relatively mild climate provides ample opportunities to undertake activities such as golfing, hiking, fishing and whale watching a year round pastime.

2. The Islands - The Island Region consists of many islands including Whidbey Island, Camano Island, Fidalgo Island and the San Juan Islands. Many of the islands are connected to the mainland by highways and the State Ferry system also serves the islands. The islands are the place to enjoy the wildlife in its natural habitat from soaring eagles, playful porpoises and the great Orca whales. Here you will also find vineyards, fine dining and art galleries.

3. The North Cascades - Wherever you go in the North Cascades there is beautiful scenery with spectacular and colorful views. The range itself consists of towering granite formations carved out by glacial forces making them favorite haunt of both mountaineers and casual hikers. Skiers and snowboarders alike enjoy the snow covered volcano Mount Baker. Skagit Valley lies to the west of the range and is home to the world’s largest tulip fields.

4. Ponderosa Pine Country - this North Eastern part of the state remains unspoiled with its dense mountain terrain and its coniferous forests. It remains the only habitat for the last herd of caribou still surviving in the country.

5. Columbia River Plateau - The Columbia River flows through the plateau where its energy is harnessed by the Grand Coulee Dam, the largest single power producer in the world. Tour the Dam and watch the nightly laser show after dark. The area is a haven for boaters, fishermen, water sports enthusiasts, hikers and cyclists.

6. The Palouse - This is the wheat belt of the State. The rolling hills and amber waves of grain make it one of the richest wheat growing areas in the world. Umatilla National Forest with its peaks and canyons is ideal for hiking, mountain biking and horse back riding. Here you may encounter Rocky Mountain Elk, big horn sheep, deer, cougar and black bear.

7. Wine Country - This region enjoys more than 300 days of sun each year making it an ideal area for orchards and vineyards. Washington is the world leader in apple production and also produces 75 percent of the hops grown in the USA for beer. The wines from Washington win more awards proportional to production than any other wine region in the world.

8. Volcano Country - Home of Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens and Mount Adams rising from the surrounding hills and within close proximity to urban centers from Portland to Puget Sound.

9. The Coast - Washington State has the longest stretch of wild coast outside Alaska, including some of the tallest peaks and longest sand spits in the world, including Dungeness Spit near Sequim and the Long Beach peninsular. There are no rows of high-rise hotels or condos here, just the natural beauty and elegant accommodations. It is a haven for bird and whale watchers with abundant fresh seafood for those that wish to sample the local delights.

10. Olympic & Kitsap Peninsulas - Activities on the peninsulas are as diverse as the spectacular landscape. It is possible in the same day to snowboard in the morning and scuba dive in the afternoon. Traverse a glacier and soak in a hot spring, go white water rafting or stroll on the beach, fish from the shore or climb Mount Olympus. Watch out wherever you go for elk, black bear, deer and bald eagles.
