Virginia
Virginia has been welcoming new arrivals since 1607, when the first permanent English colonists arrived in Jamestown. Stretching from the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay to the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains, and from skyscrapers and shopping malls to tranquil pastures and scenic byways, Virginia offers lots for your family to love. In between are quaint, historic towns, homes and villages where famous patriots lived with families of their own. Virginia was the birthplace of eight American presidents, and throughout the state textbook pages come alive, from the adventures of individuals and families who founded the first permanent English settlement in the New World to the trail carved through the wilderness by Daniel Boone. Those passionate about military history will discover numerous Revolutionary and Civil War battlefields on Virginia's soil. Nature lovers of all ages can hike the longest stretch of the Appalachian Trail running along the western side of Virginia, observe the habitats of wildlife, marvel at the giant limestone caverns along the Shenandoah Valley and explore scenic highways like Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Beach lovers can bask on the warm beaches of Hampton Roads, delight in ocean-kissed barrier islands off the Eastern Shore and encounter some of the most exciting boating and saltwater fishing on the East Coast. The young at heart find thrills and entertainment galore at Virginia's theme parks with new attractions each season. Lovers of outdoor recreation enjoy a full range of activities including hiking, biking, skiing and golfing at Virginia’s four-season resorts, while camping, swimming and picnicking await visitors to more than 50 regional, state and national parks. Numerous rivers and lakes, nearly 3,000 miles of freshwater streams and more than 1,200 miles of tidal shoreline provide the backdrop for abundant water activities. Located midway between New York and Miami, Virginia — with a temperate climate suitable for a variety of activities year round — is easily accessible with its well-maintained major highways; commercial airports, including Reagan Washington National and Washington Dulles International; and Amtrak rail service connecting Virginia cities to commuter and long-distance travel routes.
