Optometrist

 

Qualifications.  

The optometrist shall be a doctor of optometry, meet or exceed national standards established by Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization (JCAHO), meet the standards of the American Army Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) Association, meet the standards of the American Optometric Association, meet the standards of the American Academy of Optometry, and meet the continuing certification.

Have successfully completed an accredited optometry training program.

Graduates of foreign training schools are required to possess both a license to practice optometry and other certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or 5th Pathway.

Be employed full-time in the practice of optometry or in training for the two years prior to the commencement of services under this contract.

Have and maintain current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.

 

Description.

Optometry— Perform the full range of Optometric duties, referring to the Staff Ophthalmologist all cases involving ocular pathology, ocular injuries, or patients who do not meet the physical standards to be retained on active duty or require an eye profile due to visual limitations. 

Patients who require the services of other specialists will be referred to the appropriate clinic for further evaluation. 

Initiate prescription for optical devices, visual training, or any approved treatment currently accepted by the Surgeon General and local policy for proper patient therapy. 

Participate in the In-service Professional Development Seminar and maintain constant and continuing contacts with all levels of the hospital staff of other health clinic units in the performance of these duties. 

Remain in daily patient contact with all strata of the local population authorized and entitled to optometric care.

 

Hours of Operation.

The duty schedule will be five days a week, Monday through Friday.  Standard Clinic hours generally consist of 8 hours, 0730-1630 with 60 minutes unpaid lunch time, exclusive of federal and training holidays.
