Dermatologist

 

Qualifications. 

Shall have and maintain an unrestricted license in one of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands, be able to obtain clinical privileges to practice medicine at the MTF where services are provided and have current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration number (certification).

Have a Doctor of Medicine degree from an accredited college approved by the Council of Medical Education and Hospitals of the American Hospital Association or possess permanent certification by the Education Council for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Must be Board Certified in Dermatology and have completed an applicable internship and residency in an accredited U.S. Medical Specialty Training Program.

Have evidence of skill and experience in Dermatology subject to verification and comprehensive documentation, as determined by the privileges granted from the current practice site and current evaluation from the Department Chief.

Posses ability to thoroughly examine, diagnose and treat a variety of illnesses and diseases of a complex nature in dermatology.

HCP shall have at least three (3) years experience of applicable dermatology procedures within the last five (5) years.

Have current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS). This certification shall be maintained in a current status at all times while performing services under this contract.

Possess sufficient initiative, interpersonal relationship skills and social sensitivity such that he/she can relate constructively to a variety of patients from diverse backgrounds.

Shall remain current and achieve required continuing education units at no additional cost to the Government.

Description. 

Performs duties as a practitioner in general medicine, provides medical consultation and serves as a Dermatologist involving problems ranging from moderate complexity to difficult. 

The Dermatologist oversees the Dermatology Physician Assistant delivery of care. 

The incumbent is relied upon to proceed on own initiative and has final responsibility for decisions regarding emergency cases as well as the full range of normal and abnormal diagnostic and treatment procedures. 

Incumbent works independently in accordance with methods and practices of the medical profession and established administrative policies as an expert in the field of Dermatology.  The quality of professional and administrative work is evaluated using the quality assurance principles, policies and regulations as mandated by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO), and as structured by appropriate Army and local regulations and policies.

Examines, diagnoses, and prescribes treatment for a wide variety of skin diseases, injuries and illnesses for authorized personnel.  Thoroughly examines patients; studies past medical history; orders appropriate laboratory, radiologic and other diagnostic tests. 

Studies and interprets routine and emergency test results as necessary to prescribe care and treatment based on findings.  Performs simple and complex excisions of benign and malignant skin neoplasms.

Provides medical care and consultation for emergency conditions of the skin (toxic epidermolytic necrosis, crythroderma) and non-emergency acute and chronic skin conditions. 

Responsible for recognizing disease syndromes which are sometimes difficult to discern or identify; diagnose symptoms which may be disguised; prescribe and carry out treatment program for patients who do not present major complications. 

Determines the necessity for referral of patients to specialty clinic or hospital based on emergency treatment requirements, if needs are beyond the scope of the Clinic.

Provides continuing treatment and follow-up care of illnesses, injuries, diseases and complications as they arise, such as eczema, psoriasis, skin neoplasms and others.

Examines, diagnoses, treats and provides Dermatology medical and consultation services to patients with skin diseases and various skin irritations/disorders (i.e.  dermatitis, dermatophytosis, severe acne problems, etc.) sometimes complicated/caused by allergic or chemical reactions or dermatologic conditions which may or may not be job-related.

Performs dermatological pre-placement, fitness-for-duty, retirement and other physical exams as required.  Completes patients’ medical records on paper or electronically after each visit.

Maintains professional competence and adapts new techniques and procedures as appropriate.

In Coordination with Chief, Department of Primary Care, coordinates, plans and revises SOPs and guidelines for patient flow, medical care and occupational health care programs, and services rendered at the Clinic.

Makes authoritative diagnoses, treatment and referral decisions on cases examined, however, consultants are available as deemed necessary for advice on unusually complex or controversial cases or on highly specialized problems.

Performs assignments within the framework of approved medical practices and procedures. 

Utilizes various medical journals and publications along with AR 40-5, for research, reference, and regulatory compliance. 

Hours of Operation.  

The usual tour of duty consists of 8 hours per day, Monday thru Friday, excluding holidays, usually between the hours of 0730 to 1630 unless otherwise required.  The shift also includes a one (1) hour lunch break which is not compensated by the Government.  Working during lunch period shall not be considered extended hours, unless the work is required and approved by the Clinic Chief.  The maximum number of hours per week shall not exceed 40 hours unless extended hours are authorized and approved in writing by the Chief of Dermatology or a designated Government representative.
